Regular eye exams can detect vision issues or eye diseases. A comprehensive eye exam often includes the following tests: visual acuity examination, ocular motility examination, fundus examination, color blindness test, contrast sensitivity test, visual field test, refraction assessment.

Optometrists provide preliminary evaluations, diagnoses and treatments, whereas ophthalmologists are specialized to further diagnose and treat eye diseases. On the other hand, opticians help to provide prescription spectacles or contact lenses.

The fundus examination often includes the retina - it helps to check the retina, optic disk and the underlying blood vessels. A comprehensive eye exam can effective detect the following eye disease: cataract, glaucoma or retinal (macular) degeneration.
