Corneal dystrophy refers to the following eye condition: the cornea gradually loses its normal clarity, due to increasing cornea thickness. Corneal dystrophy is normally a slowly progressing disease.
There are many different corneal dystrophies, and these diseases are typically genetic. These diseases can often affect both eyes, and their symptoms tend to progress gradually. A common exmaple is keratoconus.
Only a thorough eye examination can diagnose the corneal diseases. Some corneal dystrophies may cause severe visual impairment, while other corneal dystrophies may just cause pain. The patient should consult a corneal specialist doctor.
